UPCOMING FREE TALKS

Washington Metro Area

Libraries, Community Centers, & Art Galleries

David Hazard walks you through a virtual book publishing committee meeting, telling you exactly what each member of a review committee, from the publisher to the promotions director, needs to hear to give the “thumbs-up” vote for your manuscript. Afterwards, he’ll field all your questions about agents, contracts, and e-book publishing.

David Hazard's talks are always anticipated and appreciated by our library patrons. His practical advice, born of years of experience, has encouraged many local writers to hone their craft and work toward publication!

    — with David Hazard and Becky Harblin

    Saturday, August 19, 2017, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM

  • Writing Powerful People: Making Your Characters - Real and Fictional - Come to Life
    Sunday, September 10, 2017, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Character development is essential to certain types of writing, including memoirs and character-driven novels and short stories. Character revelation is tricky, and too often done in "information" or "backstory" dumps. Not very satisfying. ("Oh here it comes - the backstory....")

This workshop will help you understand how to find or create the dynamic element within your people, real or imagined. If you want to improve your character skills, this workshop is for you.

  • Memoirs and Novels : The Secrets of Great Narrative Writing
    Saturday, October 7, 2017, 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Great memoirs don't just happen -- there is a secret to writing them.

Learn how to story-board your memoir from an expert writing coach. There is a "golden thread" of meaning in every life, and when you find it and write about it you connect with a broad audience of readers who will not be able to put your book down.

There are no 'ordinary lives' -- not really. The extraordinary is always there, just beneath the surface. Find that thread in your life, and write about it.
